World cup returned to Indian subcontinent after 1996 in 2011. India were the red-hot favourites as it got the perfect mix of youth and experience. But the journey was never easy as it finds it difficult to find the right team combination. Raina was benched during the league stages of the game but was brought back into the side during the quarterfinal stages. He has played a stellar role with cameos in both t20 quarter-final and semi-final. Particularly in the quarterfinal, India was tasked to beat Pakistan to enter semi-final and Ricky pointing hit an all-important century to guide Austria to a competitive total of 260 in a tricky pitch. Gautham Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar replied with half-centuries each but their wicket followed by the middle order collapse has let India to chase75 in 71 deliveries. Raina along with Yuvraj Singh played sensibly and took India home.
His heroics in the 2008 Asia cup:
Raina was the exciting young prospect during that time. He utilised the opportunity given to him during the Asia cup 2008. Even this series has helped him to cement his place in the Indian batting line-up. Under Dhoni, he was promoted to no.3 during that tournament and has played a crucial role in India regaining their Asia cup championship. He has scored half-centuries against Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka followed by the century against Hong Kong. He has amassed with 372 runs and become the second-highest run-scorer in that series.
Masterminding the chases:
During mid-2000’s India was the team that is more comfortable in defending the totals but under Dhoni coupled with the emergence of youngsters like Yuvraj and Raina has changed this perception. Particularly Raina has played the role of a finisher in many games that took India to victories. His stellar performance against England in 2006 when he amassed 89-ball 81 that helped India to taste victory was one of the evidence. Apart from this he is also identified as best t20player and is first India to score centuries in all formats of the game.
